Sometimes I wonder what my ethics really are. I work in the world of advertising; my job is to lie to you why you want something. I have to put a positive spin on things or paint a bleak picture of the competitor. Fast food giant McDonalds has reportedly allocated nearly 500 Million dollars of marketing might against the author of Fast Food Nation in anticipation of his new book. The advertisers job? Put a “positive spin†on the company and greasy artery choking fast food. Surely that amount of money won’t make the Big Mac any healthier, but remember, you’re gullible. I prey on you.
If I weren’t in advertising I would most likely aspire to be an actor. I guess it’s the lure of escapism. Being someone else or thinking in a different frame of mind is always better. I like meeting with new clients. You have to quickly get into their heads and figure out how their business works. Not only that, but you have to get in the heads of the people who patronize their business. It’s not a business where the scope of understanding with the customer is learning their name or reciting an order. You’ve got to learn their business, their competitors, and their industry both present and future. Sounds like a lot to digest? I love it.
The world is full of fascination and the reality of creativity is, knowledge is power. Inspiration comes from everything. All day I think about ads. However, get too busy and you’ll find your creativity taxed. Setting an hour aside to just sit and think seems unproductive. All you’ve done is think in that hour Jay, you haven’t even touched your Mac? Well, it’s concept before creation.
Do I ask a lot of questions? Yes. I love questions. I love interesting people. I also love questions because it allows me to stop talking. I do enjoy talking and shamefully I will boast from time to time but that is a characteristic of mine I hate. That’s why interesting people make it easy. I can just ask and absorb. The boring people bring out the worst in me. Of course what do I tell them? The boring people lack a level of that allows me to talk about meaningful articles. Are we all dumb or just over saturated with apathy?
You will notice the new layout. Random. Yes, as this blog will be more and more of…old posts will look fucked up. Sorry?
