Sadly a major part of my day is having my design dictated by half-wits. I fail to understand why you would hire someone aesthetically gifted to design something and then you change it to however you want? Keeping in mind that you know nothing about design, yet feel obligated to maintain control. The result? CRAP-O-LA!
For portfolio purposes I was going through my adbank at work the other day trying to find my favorite ads. Designing ads for a small newspaper isn’t the greatest way to churn out any Clio or Cannes quality work, but on some rare occasions an advertiser will allow you to ignite their ad with your creative flame. Unfortunately the end result is still and even more frustratingly ALWAYS will be the begrudgingly derelict criticism of the client who turns a prime example of good visual communication into shit. After nearly two years of designing ads at the newspaper it was very disheartening to find almost nothing I would even dare be proud enough to show my friends let alone esteemed advertising execs. Of course living in a community where the ideology of good design is still Microsoft Clip-Art doesn’t help any.
Special thanks to China Hillman for sending me this link on the trials and tribulations of a designer. It clearly made my day. Have a read!
